Deregulation in Maryland

The Electric Customer Choice and Competition Act was enacted in Maryland in 1999. This legislation created the MD Electric Choice program which enables residents to choose the MD electric supplier they want to use.

Currently, there is a large percentage of Maryland electricity customers who are choosing lower rate options with competitive electricity suppliers.  Switching is easy, you just compare the rate and term length options and enroll with the supplier of your choice.  Your new supplier and rate will be reflected on your same utility bill in 1-2 billing cycles.

The utility company is still responsible for delivering the power, maintaining the necessary infrastructure, responding to outages and billing customers. All customers who decide to make the switch to a competitive MD electric supplier will still recieve the same reliable service from their local utility.

Making the switch to a competitive Maryland electricity supplier only takes a few minutes. Here’s what you need to do:

Step 1: Compare rates and offers on top left of this page.

Step 2:  Select a rate/term option from a Maryland electric supplier.

Step 3:  Enroll with the supplier of your choice.

Currently, the local utilities serving the state of Maryland include:

Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE)
Delmarva Power
Potomac Edison
